### Position Information
## Position Purpose
To provide neutral, impartial, confidential, and informal assistance to staff and faculty of the college in the resolution of conflicts or problems that may arise in the academic or workplace environment. The Ombudsperson will also devote a small portion of time to coordinate the efforts of the College to comply with NH law concerning the reporting of child abuse and neglect and to prevent abuse and neglect in programs conducted at the college.
## Skills & Knowledge
Thorough knowledge of the theory of conflict resolution.
Demonstrated expertise in the practice of conflict resolution, including all issues surrounding confidentiality and privilege, the facilitation of group and individual communication and mediation skills.
Ability to work independently in a complex environment.

## Minimum Experience
Five to seven years of administrative/ombudsperson experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
Experience working with legal matters is desirable.

## Special Instructions to Applicants
Needs to be somewhat flexible depending on the needs of the position and availability of employees to meet. This is a part-time position, 0.60 FTE, working three eight-hour days per week.

## Key Accountabilities
Conflict Resolution/Consultation and Referral
Provide impartial and confidential consultation to Dartmouth staff and faculty who are aggrieved or concerned about an issue, including assisting in clarifying issues and generating options for resolution. Encourage, when feasible and appropriate, the use of mediation and other informal means of conflict resolution as alternatives to formal grievance procedures.
Assist inquirers in interpreting college policies and procedures.
If appropriate, and while maintaining confidentiality, conduct informal fact-finding in order to better understand an issue from all perspectives.
As appropriate, collaborate with other resources, including Human Resources, Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, Office of General Counsel, Title IX Coordinator/Clery Act Compliance Officer and others. When appropriate, facilitate group meetings using negotiation skills to enhance communication among the parties in conflict.
As appropriate, refer staff and faculty to the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity concerning matters that are potential violations of federal or state discrimination law or Dartmouth College non-discrimination policy to the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity; refer staff and faculty to the Dartmouth College Title IX Coordinator/Clery Act Compliance Officer concerning compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the Clery Act; and take other action as appropriate.
Follow up with parties involved in previous conflict to ensure resolutions are being implemented.
Outreach and Education
Responsible for on-going education and communication about the office's role and scope to all potential inquirers as well as the whole campus.
Establish and maintain a home page presence on the College web site.
Analysis and Feedback
Review periodically the patterns of grievances/conflicts with select leadership. Participate in formulating recommendations for policies or practices that would reduce or eliminate recurring conflicts.
Act as a liaison between individuals or groups and the campus administrative structure, serving as a communicator or informal facilitator, as appropriate.
Provide ongoing upward feedback regarding new or emerging areas of organizational concern.
Minors Protection (secondary role)
Works with the Office of General Counsel to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and college policies regarding minors on campus.
Serves as repository of policies and procedures, and administers a registry of programs serving youth.
Informs the campus, provides training and auditing programs.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
