## Position Purpose
The Wellness Peer Counselor provides support and coaching for clients participating in the PeerFIT study. The PeerFIT study involves a
group-based educational, skill building, and exercise program designed to increase healthy eating and exercise in overweight and obese individuals with serious mental illness. The Wellness Peer Counselor works closely with a health promotion team (including a personal fitness trainer, nutritionist, and mental health professional) to co-lead group-based education and exercise sessions. The program involves a transition to fully led peer wellness and physical activity groups to promote lasting health behavior change. Technology, including wearable physical activity tracking devices (FitBit), smartphones and smartphone applications, and social media (Facebook) will be used to promote peer support for healthy eating and exercise.

## Skills & Knowledge
Personal experience adopting a healthy lifestyle, including exercise and diet, and willingness to encourage and inspire others to do so through wellness support and coaching is required.
Direct experience as a consumer of public mental health services is preferred, as is prior paid or volunteer work experience with adults with serious mental illnesses, and prior experience leading or co-leading group activities.
Strong commitment to the rights and abilities of persons with severe mental illness to pursue a healthy lifestyle; and have access to helpful, adequate, competent supports and services to promote wellness and health behavior change.
Physically able to participate in twice weekly exercise groups.
Ability to work well with others and in groups, interpersonal flexibility, strong teamwork, and excellent communication skills.
Prior experience using a cell phone, email, and the Internet preferred. Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
## Minimum Experience
One year of relevant experience in a health or social science, clinical/ research setting or the equivalent preferred.
## Minimum Education
Associates degree or high school diploma.

This is a temporary, part-time position.

## Key Accountabilities
Wellness Coaching
Includes co-leading healthy lifestyle education involving skill learning curriculum and nutrition education sessions, and exercise groups, and transitioning to leading health promotion support and physical activity groups under the supervision of personal fitness trainer, nutritionist, and mental health professionals.
Responsibilities include drawing from personal experiences to validate clients' experiences and to provide guidance, support and encouragement to clients to take responsibility and actively engage in exercise and increase healthy eating.
Role Modeling
Setting examples of positive lifestyle change, including regular participation in physical exercise, increasing healthy eating, and self-monitoring physical activity with wearable tracking devices (FitBit).
Motivational Messaging
Use of technology, including Facebook, smartphones, and wearable physical activity tracking devices (FitBit) to provide motivation and peer support for health behavior change.
Teamwork
Collaborate with the PeerFIT team to promote a team culture in which mental health and health professionals and peers work together to support clients' healthy lifestyle change.
Reinforce professional recommendations for increasing exercise and healthy eating during face-to-face encounters with clients and during interactions with clients using the technology such as the wearable activity tracking devices, smartphones, and Facebook.
Act as an interpreter to help non-consumer team members better understand each client's unique and subjective experience and perceptions.
Training
Participate in training for this study. This involves travel with the study team to complete a 2-day Group Lifestyle Balance training workshop in Pittsburgh, PA. This also involves additional nutrition and exercise training sessions, as well as a technology training session with instruction for using the wearable activity tracking devices (FitBits), smartphones, and Facebook. Follow-up instruction may also be necessary.
Documentation and reporting
Includes tracking client attendance at all group sessions.
Assist the personal fitness trainer and Group Lifestyle balance counselor as needed; may include gathering equipment and materials for sessions.
Participate in case conferences, weekly supervision, staff meetings, and perform other duties as required.
All study activities will take place in a smoke-free environment, and wellness peer counselor should engage in a smoke-free and drug-free lifestyle.
